Filing complaint against licensed social workers

I've enjoyed watching the 'Silent Voices' episodes w/ Dennis and Sandy.  As I've listened to the different, but eerily similar, stories of parents, grandparents and relatives losing children to the "child welfare system" in Michigan, I am saddened by the way DHS/CPS/foster care agencies handle their cases.  As a social worker - a licensed clinical social worker - currently living in CA, but born and educated in MI, I feel we, as I, too, am a victim of Michigan's system, should start filing complaints against licensed social workers and their supervisors.  If you have a valid complaint about unethical practices, please go the National Association of Social Workers website.  Read over our code of ethics and determine if a worker has acted improperly and unethically.  Then file a consumer complaint.  Go to www.michigan.gov, click on the 'Licensing for Health Care Professionals' link to read how to file the complaint.  You can also verify that a license is current, if the person or his/her supervisor is licensed and whether there have been previous complaints made against a particular worker.  If this had been done regularly by those of us affected by the "bad practices" of these so-called "social workers," we might not be at the point we are currently - fighting for our children with 'SILENT VOICES.'  If you've done this, bully for you and for those of you who think there is no where else to turn, use this avenue to send a message that states, just like the NASW Code of Ethics, we will not stand by and allow a (licensed) "social worker to participate in, condone, or be associated with dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation."  Do any of these adjectives describe what you've experienced from your interactions with social workers, interns, supervisors?  If so, then, PLEASE, file the complaint.  Let the social worker answer to his/her licensing board for a change.  Send a message!

The real test to see if something works is if children began to come home to their families whether that be mom and dad or other extended family. Children are born to families not agencies or systems. But in the mean time expose the truth every chance you get.

To Dennis:  Thanks.  I look forward to talking to or providing more information to the Senator.

To Jill Jones-Soderman:

We are colleagues.  And with all due respect, I understand the issue you raise about the ACS/CPS being "in bed" together.  However, in CA, where I work, there are licensing complaints filed all the time - and not just for the run-of-the-mill acts that are criminal in nature - against social workers, marriage and family therapists, and psychologists.  In fact, anyone who is licensed by the State can have a complaint filed against them.

My suggestion was just that - a suggestion and, per Dennis, the average lay-person may not have considered this avenue.  Whether I live in a dream world or not, I, as a licensed clinician, would never want a complaint filed against me, period.  Valid or not.

I think you're confusing my suggestion about filing complaints against dishonest social workers with the reasonable reports that must be made by mandated reporters about abuse/neglect.  My point, as Dennis commmented below, is to "step  on some toes and make noise"  about the unethical behavior of licensed social workers, who write false and dishonest reports about relative caregivers who are simply trying to care for their relatives in the child welfare system - the status of most of us on this website.

Like you, I am an advocate for children and families.  I believe that by suggesting that a relative complain to the state licensing board, empowers the relative to seek redress for the unethical behavior witnessed or experienced.  I'm not suggesting frivolous complaints be filed out of anger or in retaliation.

Karen, Thank-you for the information. I think this was very well said, and I have never thought of this avenue. We do have a senator in the state that is interested in what we have been saying. He wants more information. They are looking at ways to cut the budget and this child welfare system could use a good slashing. With the show Silent Voices when of my goals was to bring out what is happening to people like you and me. My other goal was to step on toes and make some noise. I think that we have done both. I will forward your e-mail nationwide as this is something most people can relate too. Social Worker abuse.
